The Bear’s Den sits downtown at 56 Main Street. Mornings can start with a bakery stop a few doors away; afternoons head to the mountain, the Black River, or a foliage drive on Route 100; evenings come back to the village. Independent restaurants, shops, and event dates change with the season — confirm hours before you go.

Okemo is the headline, but Ludlow is a four-season base: skiing and riding in winter, the Adventure Zone and hiking in summer, and foliage drives when the hills turn. Activities are often weather-dependent; check Okemo’s current hours and lift status.
Winter
Ski, ride, and quieter snow days
- Okemo Mountain Resort — Alpine skiing and snowboarding on Ludlow’s mountain, with lessons, on-mountain dining, and a family-oriented terrain mix. Trail maps and snow reports live on okemo.com.
- Timber Ripper Mountain Coaster & snowtubing — At Jackson Gore: a mountain coaster through the trees and a snowtubing park with multiple lanes. Hours vary; book or check the day-of window on Okemo’s winter activities page.
- Snowshoeing & cross-country — Quieter trails around the mountain and valley. Fox Run Golf Club in Ludlow operates as a Nordic center in winter (skiing, snowshoeing, and access toward VAST snowmobile terrain — confirm what’s open that week).
- Snowmobiling & fat biking — Vermont’s VAST network runs thousands of miles of winter trails; local outfitters and Okemo’s activity guides can point you to guided or rental options. Fat bikes stay on snow when conditions allow.
Summer
Adventure Zone, water, and village days
- Okemo Adventure Zone — Jackson Gore’s summer cluster: Timber Ripper mountain coaster, Haulback Challenge Course, Lumberin’ Cal miniature golf, The Maples disc golf, gem sluicing at Coleman Brook Mining Company, and an all-day Adventure Pass when you want one ticket for the lot.
- Scenic chairlift & hiking — Chairlift rides from the Clock Tower base, plus hiking with valley views from Mountain Road, the lift, or the Healdville trailhead. Summit yoga runs on Saturday mornings in July and August when scheduled.
- Fox Run Golf Club — An 18-hole heathland course at 89 Fox Lane in Ludlow, with views toward Okemo. Book tee times directly; foxrungolfclubvt.com.
- Black River & nearby lakes — Cast on the Black River through the valley, or spend a warmer day at nearby waters such as Echo Lake / Camp Plymouth State Park (swimming, paddling, hiking — official season, hours, and fees apply).
Fall & year-round
Foliage, Main Street, and slow valley miles
- Fall color on Route 100 — Vermont’s Scenic Route 100 Byway runs through the Okemo Valley. Peak foliage windows move year to year; the state’s foliage reports are the honest source, not a fixed calendar week.
- Downtown Ludlow — Independent shops, bakeries, and kitchens along Main Street, Pond Street, and Depot Street — walkable from the house. Village hours tighten midweek and in shoulder season.
- Maple season — Sugaring is a spring ritual. Sugarhouses and farms in the wider valley (including stops Vermont tourism lists such as Green Mountain Sugar House and Smith Maple Crest Farm) welcome visitors; confirm open days.
- Plymouth Notch — A short drive to the President Calvin Coolidge State Historic Site: birthplace, village, and museum in a preserved hill town. Combine with a lake afternoon if the park is open.

Johnny’s Kitchen
Locally owned cafe at 126 Main Street for soup, sandwiches, and salads. Casual midday option; check current hours.
Blue Duck Deli
117 Main Street. Listed locally as a farm-to-table spot for sandwiches, soups, and seasonal service. Hours have shifted between lunch and evening seatings — verify before you walk over.
The Killarney
Family-owned Irish pub at 44 Pond Street: full food menu, darts, sports, and live music on some nights. Vermont tourism notes it near the Okemo entrance. Check hours and whether kitchen is open late.
Homestyle Restaurant
Seasonal shared-plate dining at 119 Main Street, rooted in Vermont farms. Open Wednesday–Sunday in summer and ski season; Thursday–Sunday in spring and fall, per their site. Reservations on Resy; bar seating for walk-ins when available.
Main + Mountain
Neighborhood cocktail bar and kitchen across from Homestyle — patio when weather allows. Confirm open nights; it is not a seven-day diner.
The Downtown Grocery
Small, reservation-forward dining room at 41 Depot Street. Hours are limited (often weekend evenings). Confirm they are seating the night you want — do not assume a walk-in table.
Coleman Brook Tavern
Elevated-casual dining at the base of Jackson Gore at Okemo, with a farm-to-table menu and a deep wine list. On-mountain options change with season and weather. Check Okemo dining for hours.
Calcuttas at Fox Run
Restaurant at Fox Run Golf Club (89 Fox Lane) with course views. Useful when you want a table off Main Street. Seasonal hours — confirm before driving over.

A family-friendly, substance-free live-music weekend at the base of Okemo, presented by The Phoenix with Divided Sky Foundation. Scenic lift, coaster, and mini golf have been part of the mountain-side programming — confirm whether and when it returns on the current event calendar.
Friday night concerts & summit yoga
Okemo runs a summer events slate that has included Friday night concerts at Jackson Gore and Saturday-morning summit yoga (chairlift up) in July and August. Lineups and rain plans are posted on Okemo’s events page.
Independence Day at Okemo
Ludlow’s Fourth of July celebration is typically hosted at Okemo’s Clock Tower base area — food, music, and fireworks at dusk. The calendar date has landed on July 4 or a nearby weekend night; always check the current year (rain dates happen).
Chili cook-off & scarecrow weekend
Ludlow’s long-running chili cook-off is a Saturday village staple when scheduled. A scarecrow festival also appears on the Okemo Valley calendar in some years. Dates and formats shift; confirm the current listing before planning around either event.
Okemo Valley Oktoberfest
A newer annual Oktoberfest at Off the Rails (64 Pond Street). The second annual was listed for early October. Confirm time and whether it is free or ticketed that year.
Ski season open & on-mountain events
Okemo’s winter calendar covers opening weekend (weather and snowmaking permitting), holiday events, and competitions. Opening day is not a fixed date. Check the snow report rather than a brochure.
